UNIVERSE – Control in Four Easy Steps

Integration of Devices and Protocols

The first step after the start of UNIVERSE is to create an INIVERSE project (upr). Immediately after that the first devices or protocols can be integrated in UNIVERSE.

At the bottom left in the Devices tab you will find the device list sorted by device type - after finding the desired device, you only need to drag and drop that device with the mouse from left to right into the Active Devices box- the device is now available in UNIVERSE.

In the next step, the connection properties of the device need to be adjusted in the context-related tab Properties in the upper right corner of UNIVERSE - this is usually the IP address of the device in the section Connection. At Protocols/Connectors other settings, such as Ports and Command Parameter, are added.

A connection has been established when the connection point in front of the device name in the Active Devices lights up green. This does not apply to devices with passive connections only (e.g. UDP, OSC, and ArtNet). Here, the connection point is always grey.

Creating Controls on the Stage

After the desired devices and protocols are embedded in UNIVERSE, they can be addressed over different Controls - usually these are Buttons for events and Faders for value ranges. Both types of Controls can be dragged and dropped with the mouse directly from the Toolbox at the upper left on the Stage.

Controlling of Devices and Protocols

In order to control the integrated devices with the recently created Controls on the Stage, you have to drag and drop (with the Control activated) the desired Active Device in the Command tab on the left into the Command Stack and then select the desired command for the device.

Only the Commands meaningful for the Control are displayed in the Command Stack. The Commands usually have a name specified by the manufacturer. If in doubt, they can be found in in the corresponding manuals. A Command Stack can receive an unlimited amount of commands from any number of devices. So, via Wait a wide range of commands can be summed up parallel or even delayed over a single Button or Fader.

With one click at the UNIVERSE logo in the upper right corner you can now switch to the Show-Mode and activate the Control there. Alternatively, you can also operate Controls in the Edit-Mode by pressing the Shift key.
